Helping the Stream

Looking after a chalk stream
Chalk streams depend on clean water and undisturbed banks and beds. Keep litter and garden waste out of the stream, and let us know if you spot anything that doesn't look right.

Report a problem
If you see signs of pollution, such as discoloured water, an unusual smell, foam, sewage or dead fish, call the Environment Agency's 24-hour incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60. Then please let us know at friendsofboshamstream@gmail.com so we can follow it up.

If the stream runs through your land
Owners of land beside a watercourse have rights and responsibilities for its care, known as riparian ownership. West Sussex County Council's guide explains what this means: Riparian responsibilities: a landowner's guide.

Using the stream safely
Much of the stream runs through private land. Please keep to public footpaths, take care near the water, and avoid disturbing the banks and stream bed.
